Maryland traffic tickets.
Maryland has no point reduction school. Probation Before Judgment is the only realistic way to keep points off your record.

How it works in Maryland.
The District Court of Maryland hears all traffic cases, and the MVA assesses points on a rolling two year window.
Three to four points brings a warning letter, five to seven brings a mandatory Driver Improvement Program, eight to eleven suspends you, and twelve or more revokes you.
3 to 4 points
Warning letter
5 to 7 points
Mandatory Driver Improvement Program
8 to 11 points
Suspension
12 or more points
Revocation
No point reduction school, and a hearing can raise your fine.
Maryland has no point reduction traffic school. The Driver Improvement Program does not erase a single point, and being ordered into it is itself a sanction that suspends your licence if you skip it.
Meanwhile Probation Before Judgment, which most states reserve for criminal cases, is routine on ordinary speeding tickets and is the only realistic route to keeping points off. And a waiver hearing can backfire: the judge may raise your fine, up to $500.
Common violations and what they carry.
Speeding, 1 to 9 mph over
Moving violation
The bottom of the schedule.
Speeding, 10 or more over
Moving violation
Two points.
Speeding, 30 or more over
Moving violation
Five points.
20 or more over a 65 limit
Moving violation
Five points, the same as thirty or more over anywhere else.
Failure to stop at a steady red
Moving violation
Two points.
Following too closely
Moving violation
Two points.
Moving violation contributing to an accident
Moving violation
Three points.
Aggressive driving
Moving violation
Five points.
Reckless driving
Moving violation
Six points, the highest on this list.
The exact point drop off date, and the point column in the District Court preset fine book, which appears to conflict with section 16-402, are not verified.
What actually helps here.
Probation Before Judgment
The court finds guilt, then strikes the guilty verdict and enters probation instead of judgment, so no conviction is entered and the MVA assesses no points.
Expungement follows successful completion. PBJ cannot be appealed.
Expungement, but no school
Records can be expunged after three years clean, five years if there has been one safety suspension, ten years otherwise.
There is no point reduction school in Maryland. The Driver Improvement Program removes nothing, and skipping it when ordered suspends your licence.
Thirty days from receipt of a payable citation
To pay, request a payment plan, request a waiver hearing, or request a trial. A waiver hearing can go the wrong way: the judge may raise the fine, up to $500.
No, not for a trial
You may have a lawyer, but if you plead not guilty and request a trial you must appear in person.
