Georgia traffic tickets.

In Georgia, fourteen miles per hour over carries zero points and fifteen carries two. That single mile per hour is worth more than any other on the road.

How it works in Georgia.

There is no single traffic court. Depending on where the citation was written it goes to a Municipal Court, a State Court, a Probate Court in counties with no state court, or a Recorder's Court.

The Department of Driver Services assesses points, and fifteen or more in any consecutive twenty four month period suspends you. After the suspension the count resets to zero.

85 mph or more on any road

$200 Super Speeder fee from DDS

120 days to pay

Reinstatement

Another $50 on top

The thing nobody tells you

The $200 fee arrives months after court.

Two things. First, speeding under fifteen miles per hour over the limit carries zero points in Georgia. Fifteen carries two. One mile per hour separates them.

Second, the $200 Super Speeder fee is billed by DDS months after your court case is finished and is completely independent of the court. It is triggered by 75 mph or more on a two lane road, or 85 mph or more on any road. You get 120 days to pay before your driving privilege is suspended, and reinstatement then costs another $50. Drivers routinely think they are done after paying the court, ignore the DDS letter, and end up paying $250 and getting suspended.

Your options

What actually helps here.

A plea of nolo contendere

Accepted for point purposes once every five years, measured arrest date to arrest date.

You pay the fine, no points are assessed, and DDS records no conviction for suspension purposes.

A certified Driver Improvement course

Removes up to seven points, once every five years, for Georgia licence holders.

If the court orders the course, the fine is reduced by twenty percent and no points are assessed at all, again once every five years.

Your deadline

The court date printed on the Uniform Traffic Citation

There is no uniform statewide day count in Georgia. The date on the citation is the deadline, and the Super Speeder letter arrives long after it.

Do you have to be there

Yes for pleas, generally not for trials

Uniform Rule of Municipal Court 25.1(a) permits guilty or nolo pleas without you present, on a written waiver, once counsel has entered an appearance. Contested trials generally require presence.
